Don’t Let The Morning Throw Off Your Groove

We have the most motivation in the morning and I am all about taking advantage. By nightfall my only concerns are how many cookies can I fit in my face and is there a new episode of Brooklyn 99. You can’t take that away from me. It is a lot more difficult to fight my motivation in the evening than it is to create a morning routine that will help me knock out my to do list before I remember that I don’t want to do any of it. So here are some tips on how you can create a morning routine that gives you life.

Wake Up

If I had a trick to waking up on time and refreshed as hell, I would share it with the world. I have tried all of the life hacks, but the only that gets me out of the bed is sheer discipline. I have to decide the night before that I am going to wake up at 5 AM and get out of bed. Then I do it. I am not always successful. I love my morning routine, it is my favorite part of the day. But you couldn’t convince me of that when I am wrapped in blankets and having a good dream. So if you have a secret that does the trick, let me in on it. If not, you just gotta do it. Set your alarm and don’t allow yourself to listen to your snooze lies. The routine will give you more energy than extra sleep and waking up frazzled.

Get Hydrated

The first thing I do when I wake up is drink a nice glass of lemon or lime water. (Okay, okay, I check my phone first). I go from groggy to actually waking up isn’t so bad with every sip. Even if you don’t have lemons or limes, you should have water. If you can, get some sunlight while you sip your water.

Get Your Groove On

Turn on your favorite playlist and get your body moving. This will put you in a good place like nothing else will. It doesn’t even have to be long. I put on some Indian flute music and practice yoga. I have less time on days I work so sometimes I only get as far as doing a few sun salutations and my favorite stretches, but it makes a world of difference. I literally stretch away the fog from my mind and my body. Yoga not your thing? Try dancing, a work out, or literally just jumping. Nobody has to see you, just get that body moving!


No matter who you are, I believe that meditation will benefit you and you should practice it every day. Five minutes are all you need. You can do some breathing exercises, envisioning, mantras, whatever floats your boat. You can read my favorite way to meditate here. Just take some time to breath and be calm. (Without the fear of going back to sleep now that you’ve got yourself grooving).

Eat a Real Breakfast

Many of you may be thinking I have missed the coffee step, trust me, I haven’t. Don’t get me wrong, coffee is life, but drinking coffee first thing is like a slap in the face to your system. You need food first. Ideally you shouldn’t have coffee for a few hours after waking up, but I won’t be so cruel as to suggest that. Just get a decent breakfast in you, or at least sip it while you eat a decent breakfast. Your body will literally thank you. Decent breakfast examples: Oatmeal, toast with avocado, eggs, Greek yogurt, a mixture of all of these things, etc.

Save Some Time For Introspection

Technically, the meditation counts for this. That being said, my morning routine is my me time and anything more I can add to learn about myself or get in tune I totally will. Usually as I sip my tea or coffee I write in my journal. It is also a great time to receive inspiration. I have completed so many of my favorite life giving activities, I am hella in alignment. I get so many good ideas sipping my caffeinated drink and writing in my journal. I also take this time to plan out my day and put any of those ideas into action.

Make Your Mornings Something to Look Forward to

I think that this is a pretty good template for having the best morning ever. On my days off, my morning routine is often two hours long. But, everyone is different. Play around with different things to get a morning routine that starts your day off with high energy and self love. Some other great habits I have heard of include, oil pulling, self massage, making your bed ( I don’t care how healthy it is, I will never do this), read an article on different subjects, literally laugh, talk to yourself in the mirror, pick a killer outfit, skin care routine, etc. But still find some time in there to meditate.
